Mainpat
The Manpat hills are recognized as the highest hill range in the Surguja district. Following China’s occupation of Tibet in 1959, and under a rehabilitation policy established by the Government of India to provide asylum to Tibetans, Tibetan refugees were settled in the Manpat hills during 1962–63. Currently, seven camps for Tibetans are operational in the area, offering visitors a glimpse into Tibetan culture. The Tibetans primarily earn their livelihood by manufacturing woolen garments and carpets. Popularly known as the “Shimla of Surguja,” Manpat is a prominent tourist destination. Key attractions here include the vibrant Tibetan culture, as well as natural wonders such as Ultapani, Mehta Point, Tiger Point, Fish Point, and the unique “Shaking Earth” (Jaljali) phenomenon. To accommodate tourists, numerous motels and hotels have been established in Manpat for overnight stays.
